The unique, single-sided design helps to bring down the system cost. The on-board Hall sensors facilitate the board mounting inside the motor itself. The input for this design is 12V with the following devices and outputs TPS40140 (1.2V@40A): TPS40190 (3.3V@6A): TPS54350 (-5V@200mA): TPS40210 (25V@1A): TPS5430 (-12V@200mA). The supply has a range of topologies also: multiphase sync buck (TPS40140): sync buck (TPS40190): negative output sync buck-boost (TPS54350): boost (TPS40210) and negative output buck-boost (TPS5430).

The PMP6845 reference design uses three TPS40140's to control 6 Synchronous Buck Phases. Main switch pair for each phase is the dual CSD86350Q5D. The optional added CSD16325Q5 for the low side enhances efficiency: especially at full load. Efficiency is 87.5% at full load and over 90% for loads from 20 thru 80A. Electrical and Thermal test results shown for both with and without the added CSD16325Q5. An on board dynamic load allows rapid load transients to be tested.

Two TPS40140 control ICs are used to build a four phase synchronous buck converter. The input voltage is 12V with an output of 5V at up to 55A. Multiphase Synchronous Buck Converter: Six phase 12V Input to 1V at 150A
PMP2064 uses the TPS40140 in a stackable configuration to generate a multiphase design capable of high current output. The design is setup for each board to use the TPS40140 IC to generate a 2 phase output at up to 50A. Multiple boards can be linked together to create a large current output. This design demonstrates how to power GPRS modems in smart meters using LiSoCL2 batteries. GPRS modems require peak current of up to 2A during transmission. This design reduces the peak load requirements on the battery by using the TPS61021A boost converter and a 20F super capacitor to provide the required transmit current. This reduces the overall cost of the system by allowing the use of lower cost LiCoCL2 batteries while maintaining a 10-year lifetime.
