    This reference design is for isolated current measurement using a shunt and isolated amplifier. By limiting the shunt voltage to 25 mV: this design is able to reduce power dissipation in the shunt and achieve a high-current measurement range of up to 200 A. Shunt voltage is further amplified by precision op amps in instrumentation amplifier-based configuration with a gain of 10 to match the input range of isolation amplifier. The output of isolation amplifier is level shifted and scaled to utilize the complete input range of 3.3-V ADC. This design uses a free-running transformer driver to generate isolated supply voltage for the high-voltage side of the circuit. Small form factor for the power supply is achieved by the operation of driver at 400 KHz.
  • Reference Design to Measure AC Voltage & Current in Protection Relays w/Delta-Sigma Chip Diagnostics
    The TIDA-00810 reference design accurately measures analog inputs performance and includes chip diagnostics to help identify power  systems failures early by using a highly accuracy AC voltage and current measurement analog front end (AFE) and a four-channel: 24-bit simultaneously-sampling differential input Delta-Sigma ADC for measurement over wide dynamic range. The ADC is configured to measure 0-5 V unipolar. The inputs are scaled to ADC measurement range using a fixed gain amplifier with 2.5 V DC output level shift. The AFE can be used to measure output of a current transformer: potential divider with analog isolation and Rogowski active integrator. The AFE uses 10-Bit low resolution successive approximation register (SAR) ADC in parallel with a 24 bit ∑-∆ ADC for ADS131A04 diagnostics.

    This reference design is a simplified architecture for generating an isolated power supply for isolated amplifiers for measuring isolated voltages and currents. A fully integrated DC/DC converter with reinforced isolation operating from a 5-V input with configurable 5-V or 5.4-V output (headroom for low dropout regulator (LDO)) generates the isolated power. Shunts that are interfaced to ±50-mV input range isolation amplifiers configured as channel isolated inputs measure the current. Potential divider output interfaced to ±250-mV or ±12-V input range isolation amplifiers configured as group isolated inputs measure the voltage. The outputs of the isolation amplifiers interface directly to 24-bit delta sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) or are scaled to ±10 V using gain amplifiers and interfaced to 16-bit SAR ADC for performance evaluation. On-board digital diagnostics improves reliability and enhances system performance.

The ADC is configured to measure ±2.5 V bipolar input.  The inputs are scaled to ADC measurement range of ±2.5V using a fixed gain amplifier. This AFE chains two ADCs together using a common external clock to expand the number of input channels to eight while simultaneously sampling all of the input channels. By having more measurement channels per module: overall system cost is reduced.
